What is an End-of-Life Doula
An End-of-Life Doula is sometimes called a Death Doula or Death Midwife. Doulas recognize and address the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs and desires of the dying and their loved ones throughout the end of life process. Through education and guidance Doulas assist the dying individual in achieving an end of life experience that is as meaningful, peaceful, and well prepared as possible for all involved. Doulas fill the gap in restoring the sacredness to dying, provide respite to exhausted caregivers and bring deep meaning to the dying experience. Also, we help prepare people for the last breaths of their loved one.
Why an End-of-Life Doula
As an End-of-Life Doula, my mission is to be attentive to your needs and protect your sacred space as we approach the end of life. Through the process we can create an end of life plan of how you want things to look like as the time of transition gets closer. We can create a Vigil plan to show what you would like your last 24-48 hours to look like. For example, who would you like at your bedside? What would you like your family and friends to be doing during that sacred time? What music do you want playing in your final hours? Do you want it to be quiet? Your Doula can assist you with this whether you are at home or in a facility. We know you may not have all the answers to these questions, but we will do our best to facilitate the conversation so that there is open communication. Your Doula can also make referrals to appropriate community resources and care providers, thereby increasing access to all available services.
What an End-of-Life Doula Will Not Do
As your Doula I will not make ANY decisions related to end of life care for you. I will not give any medical advice. I will not interfere with your medical providers. I will not project my own beliefs and will always respect your spiritual beliefs and values.
Our goal at Peaceful Transitions, is to achieve an end-of-life experience that
is as meaningful, peaceful and well prepared as possible for all involved.
